The Pope, The Environment...

And a really smart British economist.

Yes, it's a big, big problem. The little nugget in the back of a lot of people's minds -- that climate change is probably the most important problem facing us, with the most devastating consequences. Hopefully it's not too late to get the conversation moving so we do whatever we can to avert a crisis. I've now seen it being compared economically to the Great Depression, only world wide. This is what threatens our livelihoods and those of countless others.

I found these two articles extremely interesting, as we already pretty much know what needs to be done about global climate change, but just need to get the conversation moving a bit quicker. See the links below for interesting viewpoints on global climate change and global warming from British economist Sir Nicholas Stern (and the Baron of Brentford -- smart guy, short bio on wikipedia is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Stern) and Pope Benedict XVI himself. Good stuff.

Nicholas Stern article: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/stern-warns-that-climate-change-is-far-worse-than-2006-estimate-810488.html

Pope Benedict XVI (informal, blog-style) article: http://grist.org/news/2008/04/18/pope/index.html

Unfortunately the candidates who would be best for environmental policy (Kucinich and Edwards) are out of the race. The two democrats still running basically latched onto John Edwards' environment plan, but weren't willing to go as far as he would have. Kucinich may not have run even a modest town like Cleveland very well, but I think he deserves a place at the table.

If you don't already know, I love this website on environmental news: http://grist.org/
They seem to have reliable information.
This is how they compare the candidates: http://grist.org/candidate_chart_08.html

Another watchdog group that I can't remember the name of at the moment have given Hillary and Obama passing grades. John McCain failed in his first interview with environmentalists, and hasn't shown he is up to fighting a threat that is much more real than terrorism.

Share this with everyone you know. Everyone should get in on the conversation.

This guy likes the big furry guy below more than he likes George W. Bush. At least his boss does.
